Parent Growth Group
Description:
Over the past several years there has been a substantial increase in the utilization of wilderness programs, therapeutic boarding schools and residential treatment centers. The “Parent Growth Group” is an eight week group for parents who are seeking support and growth while their child is enrolled in or transitioning out of wilderness/residential placement. Developed by a therapist who is also the proud parent of a wilderness therapy graduate, this group provides an opportunity for parents to gain new strategies and communication skills. In addition, the group provides strength and support through a parent-driven community.
Topics:
- Analysis of communication/parenting style
- Getting past the behavior; fostering your child’s strengths
- The family system; teen acting-out and the status quo/siblings
- Staying grounded and off the rollercoaster
- Dealing with setbacks
- Parent communication; fighting triangulation and getting on the same page -Dealing with shame and blame
- Goals for continuing parent growth
* This group provides parent growth skills. The group is not a forum for advice on discharge/placement decisions or program recommendations.
